An album I'm really enjoying right now is "Illinois" by Sufjan Stevens. Sufjan (pronounced "SOOF-yahn") is a folk musician with an orchestra in his head. His lyrics are personal and poetic and his melodies are simple but lushly arranged with horns, strings, and backup singers filling out the sound.
Metacritic ranks "Illinois" as the top reviewed album of 2005, so lots of people are recommending it. If you check out the album, I think you'll particularly like the plentiful lyrical references to your neighbor to the west and Stevens' contemplative faith.
