Today I fought the climbing rose on the arbor. It was a close call but I think I won despite several scratches and thorn pricks. Several sections were dead, not having survived the late snow.
This rose blooms once, around mid-June with clumps of smaller pink flowers. So the best time to prune is in July after the blooms are spent. Last year I kind of let it go, because it blooms on the previous year's growth. Now it's a bit overwhelming. I think later this summer I'll really cut it back to a few organized branches.
