The kids and I finally finished their AWANA Grand Prix pinewood derby cars. Good thing too, since Wednesday is time trials and the race is next Saturday. So here are a few shots of the Prince's Low Rider "Silver Shark" and the Princess' Hot Rod with Fire:

The red is a water based stain. The aquamarine was done by spray painting silver, then a blue-gray and finally a 50's turquoise. By layering light coats from different angles it has a shimmering quality about it, changing colors from different vantage points.
Of course several coats of a polycrylic keep the decals safe and a coat of wax gives it a nice shine.
Now if they'll only run well.
