Even though Liz Primeau's home can be found in Canada, her book Front Yard Gardens: Growing More Than Grass is just as applicable for the lower 48. She presents a balanced book, evenly divided between theory and planting details. There is practical advise as well as encouragement to follow your heart. With 240 color photos from over 70 gardens there are plenty of new ideas to explore. I especially like the photos taken from the same location at different times, showing the seasonal changes of a garden. There are suggested plant listings but even these may be modified based on personal preferences and your local climate. The book is divided into eight different garden types, everything from the small city garden to the sprawling neighborhood gardens. If you are planning on livening up that patch of grass between the house and street, then check your local library or favorite book shop for this bouquet of ideas.
