Networking

Has anyone ever tried to network an old home by themselves? While at Lowe's I "discovered" a network solution system designed for the do-it-yourselfer by Pass & Seymour. It takes the concept of electrical wiring and applies it to information cable - TV, phone, audio and internet.
There's a central "brain" and modular outlets so that any combination or layout can be acheived. Now I've received quotes from major installers and the cost savings would be great. I'm just not sure if it's something I really could tackle on my own. Amy and the kids would go nuts if I blew up the TV or phone. Has anyone ever installed one of these or is it just another marketing gimmick?
